Touring the 'big' city

The city of Anchorage is nestled between the the upper shores of Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountain Range. With a population of over 260,000, it is the largest city in Alaska and, as such, offers a unique blend of the best of Alaska's culture and wildlife. On a clear day you can see Mt. McKinley in the north and most of the Aleutian Chain stretching across the south-west skyline.

Wildlife abounds in Anchorage. Be sure to keep an eye open for moose as you travel in our luxurious motorcoaches. They love to wander through the town, resting in our yards and eating our tulips.

There is a lot to see and do in Anchorage; it's a beautiful place. Travel south to Potter's Marsh, a wetland refuge that is home to many Alaskan animals. Visit Earthquake Park to learn more about the 1964 earthquake and to view our lovely Sleeping Lady (Mt. Susitna). Check out the float planes on Lake Hood (take a quick ride!) and the Aviation Heritage Museum.

Or stop by the Alaska Zoo to see some of our native Alaskan animals and meet Ahpun and Oreo. They are bear cubs that were orphaned in the wild and raised together. What makes them special is that Ahpun is a polar bear and Oreo is a grizzly, yet they are the best of friends.

Downtown Anchorage is home to a host of specialty shops and the Saturday Morning Market, a unique opportunity to meet true Alaskan artisans. Take some time to wander over to the Captain Cook Monument and admire the view of the Inlet. See the Oscar Anderson house; built in 1915, it was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage.

Also located downtown is the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, home to the best of Alaskan culture. If you come in June or August, stop by Ship Creek to watch the Silver Salmon Derby. When the salmon start running, the banks of the creek are packed wall-to-wall with fishermen.
